Street Design's "Top Lighting" uses LED ribbons recessed into the capping of their new planters and angled to illuminate the side panels. Any or all sides can be lit, and the LEDs are available in the usual range of colours and whites.

They can be used to achieve different results at different power levels - to add a subtle hint of light below the capping all the way up to painting the panel in a vibrant, strong colour. Because of the shade provided by the overhang of the capping the light is noticeable at the top of the panel even in full daylight.

The pictures below show one of the new planters (based on the Grenadier design) fitted with RGB lighting strips within the wooden capping. The timber slats do an excellent job of picking up the colour from the LEDs, even with strong ambient light.

Using the same arrangement as above but with with steel capping yields similar results on the wooden slats but adds a metallic gleam at the top.

Downlighting recessed into the steel capping provides a strong splash of colour to the panels of this timber planter, pictured left.

This brushed steel panel picks up a very sophisticated glow from a low-powered strip of RGB LEDs set to a light blue .

Downlighting provides an interesting, subtle touch of colour to the panels of these stainless steel planters, pictured left and below.

The brushed stainless steel planters in these pictures are lit by RGB downlighters recessed in the capping. The metalwork and the lighting appear changed with this configuration - both are softened, the metal looks warmer, the light is more of a glow than a beam.

The pictures below are of planters of the same design but finished with mirrored stainless steel - they produce a much stronger lighting effect because of the excellent mirror.

The pictures above are of stainless steel planters with a mirrored finish. The pictures were taken from a low angle to reveal the lighting array recessed in the capping. Most materials will integrate the light output from LEDs, but a mirrored surface can maintain the individual beams, allowing an interference pattern to be perceived; these are called Moire fringes, and they give the impression of a curved surface with changing angles as the spectator moves past. A strip of diffuser can be added to remove this unusual effect if it is not wanted.
